Shannon Maloney's Biography

Hi, I'm Shannon Maloney and am a sophomore at Johnson State College majoring in elementary education with a concentration in psychology. I live in Montpelier, VT and have lived there all my life. I want to be a future educator because I struggled in elementary school as a student and I did not find my passion for learning until high school. I want to be able to be a positive role model for my students and to inspire my students to reach their full potential. I want to give my students the fun and positive education that I never had, so they can enjoy learning and be life-long learners.

I completed my service learning project at Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier, VT, which offers a soup kitchen and a food pantry. At the soup kitchen we served lunch to 74 people. We worked in a team effort and took on different roles in order to meet the needs of and advocate for our fellow community members.

Macy Lavoie's Biography

Hi, I'm Macy Lavoie. I'm a senior at Johnson State College majoring in Elementary Education with a concentration in Psychology. Im from Swanton Vermont and I currently substitute at Swanton Elementary School. I've always enjoyed working with children and watching how they learn. I believe as a future educator it is important to be a positive influence for students, colleagues and the community as a whole.

My service learning project consisted of volunteering at a family center called Northwestern Counseling Support and Services. NCSS offers several programs for various age groups of individuals dealing with emotional and behavioral problems, mental illnesses and developmental disabilities. Volunteering at NCSS has made me more aware of the importance of teamwork and how to advocate for individual beliefs.

Amanda White's Biography

I am from a small town called Irasburg, Vermont. I am currently a Sophomore at JSC. I am pursuing a bachelors degree in elementary education. I have always loved working with kids and look forward to advocating for and being a positive role model to my future students.

For my service learning project I worked with the Newport Head Start in creating a reading program. I got book donations to give to the children whom attend the event and made poster to advertise for the program.

We Are One: Team Picture

From left to right: Shannon Maloney, Amanda White, and Macy Lavoie

Although each of us accomplished our service learning projects in different places we all fulfilled the same goal of teaching toward a democracy. Our projects made a difference to our communities by advocating and offering support for the members as a whole. The different places we volunteered helped the community by offering support, food, programs and educational opportunities for various ages and social classes. In doing these projects our team learned the importance of colleagueship and advocacy and we, as future educators, will carry these important terms into our own classrooms someday.
